Where to Stay in Klosters: Best Areas, Hotels & Apartments

Choosing where to stay in Klosters is less about finding one universally “best” hotel and more about choosing the right part of the village for the holiday you are planning.

Klosters stretches along the Prättigau valley, with two main centres: Klosters Platz and Klosters Dorf. They are close enough to make getting around straightforward, but they suit slightly different visitors.

For most first-time visitors, Klosters Platz is the easiest all-round base. It puts you close to the main railway station, village centre and the Gotschna cable car for access towards the Parsenn ski and hiking area.

Klosters Dorf is quieter and particularly convenient for Madrisa, making it an attractive choice for families and anyone planning to spend several days on Klosters’ family mountain.

There are also hotels and apartments between the two centres, plus self-catering accommodation spread more widely through Klosters.

Our quick recommendation

Choose Klosters Platz if this is your first visit, you are arriving by train, you want easy access to Gotschna or you prefer to have restaurants and village facilities close at hand.

Choose Klosters Dorf if Madrisa is going to be an important part of your holiday, particularly with younger children.

For a longer stay, larger family group or anyone wanting kitchen facilities, a holiday apartment can offer more space and flexibility than a hotel.

Staying in Klosters Platz

Best for first-time visitors, rail travel and Gotschna

Klosters Platz is the main centre of the village and the area we would recommend first to most visitors who have not stayed in Klosters before. Klosters Platz is particularly convenient if you want to be within walking distance of many of the village’s restaurants and bars.

The railway station at Klosters Platz is the principal staffed station in the village and provides connections through the Rhätische Bahn network. The Gotschna cable car is also here, giving winter skiers and summer walkers direct access towards the Parsenn mountain area.

Much of Klosters’ central accommodation, shopping and dining is concentrated around this part of the village.

For visitors travelling without a car, being within easy walking distance of Klosters Platz station is particularly useful. Switzerland’s public transport system makes arriving by rail straightforward, while local trains and buses can then be used for trips around Klosters and towards Davos.

Klosters Platz is particularly good for:

  • first-time visitors;
  • skiing on Gotschna and Parsenn;
  • visitors arriving by train;
  • couples;
  • short breaks;
  • travellers wanting restaurants and village facilities nearby;
  • visitors planning to divide their time between Klosters and Davos.

The main disadvantage is simply that Klosters Platz is the busier of the two centres. Visitors looking for the quietest possible setting may prefer Klosters Dorf or accommodation farther from the centre.

Klosters Dorf
Klosters Dorf

Staying in Klosters Dorf

Best for Madrisa and family holidays

Klosters Dorf lies farther down the valley and has its own railway station.

The biggest reason to stay here is Madrisa. The Madrisa valley station is in Klosters Dorf, making this a particularly convenient base for families intending to spend a significant part of their holiday on the mountain.

In winter, Madrisa is well suited to families and less experienced skiers, with children’s snow areas and practice facilities. In summer, Madrisa-Land becomes a mountain adventure area with play features, water activities, walks and other family attractions.

Being able to walk from your accommodation to the Madrisa cable car can be more valuable to a family with young children than being in the centre of Klosters Platz.

Klosters Dorf railway station is unstaffed but has ticket machines and step-free platform access, so travelling elsewhere by train remains straightforward.

Klosters Dorf is particularly good for:

  • families with younger children;
  • Madrisa skiing;
  • summer days on Madrisa;
  • quieter holidays;
  • visitors who prefer a less central setting;
  • travellers happy to use local trains and buses when visiting Klosters Platz.

If your main reason for visiting is skiing on Parsenn, however, Klosters Platz is likely to be the more convenient base.

Klosters Platz or Klosters Dorf?

For many visitors, this is the most important accommodation decision to make. The two areas are not far apart, so choosing one does not prevent you visiting the other. The question is really about what you want immediately outside your accommodation.

Choose Klosters Platz if:

  • You want the easiest all-round base.
  • You plan to use Gotschna regularly.
  • You are travelling to Klosters by train.
  • You want to be close to central restaurants and shops.
  • You are visiting Klosters for the first time.

Choose Klosters Dorf if:

  • You are travelling with younger children.
  • Madrisa will be an important part of your holiday.
  • You prefer a quieter location.
  • You are happy to use public transport to reach Klosters Platz when necessary.

Should you stay close to the ski lifts?

Klosters is a traditional Alpine village rather than a purpose-built ski resort, so most accommodation is not genuinely ski-in/ski-out.

For winter visitors, it is therefore worth checking the actual walking distance to the lift you are most likely to use, rather than relying on general descriptions such as “close to the slopes”.

For Gotschna and Parsenn

Look principally at Klosters Platz. The Gotschna cable car provides access from Klosters towards the extensive Parsenn ski area.

For Madrisa

Look principally at Klosters Dorf.

This can be particularly helpful for families with young children, when reducing the amount of equipment that needs to be carried or transported each morning can make a noticeable difference.

If you find accommodation farther from the lifts, also check whether the hotel offers a ski shuttle or whether there is a convenient local bus stop nearby.

Sunstar Hotel Klosters

A quieter base in Klosters Dorf

Sunstar Hotel Klosters is in Klosters Dorf and is particularly worth considering if Madrisa is important to your holiday.

The hotel is within walking distance of the Madrisa cable car and has its own indoor swimming pool and wellness area.

In winter, the hotel also operates a ski shuttle to the Madrisa and Gotschna cable cars.

Its position away from central Klosters Platz gives it a quieter feel while retaining access to the local transport network.

Good for: Madrisa, quieter holidays, couples and families.

CHECK SUNSTAR HOTEL AVAILABILITY

Madrisa Lodge

Particularly convenient for the Madrisa cable car

Madrisa Lodge is a family-run hotel in Klosters Dorf, only a few minutes from both the railway station and the Madrisa valley station.

That location makes it one of the most straightforward choices for families who expect to spend a substantial amount of time on Madrisa.

The hotel has 30 rooms and positions itself particularly towards families.

Good for: families, Madrisa and visitors wanting straightforward public transport access.

CHECK MADRISA LODGE AVAILABILITY

Hotel Sport Klosters

Family facilities between Klosters Platz and Dorf

Hotel Sport sits between the two main centres and has an unusually broad range of facilities for families.

These include a large indoor swimming pool with a separate children’s area, tennis courts, minigolf, an indoor play area, bowling and outdoor grounds.

It can therefore work particularly well for families who value having activities available at the hotel as well as in the mountains.

Its location means you are not directly beside either Gotschna or Madrisa, so visitors should expect to use local transport or the hotel’s transport arrangements when heading to the lifts.

Good for: families, longer stays and children who appreciate plenty to do away from the mountains.

Holiday apartments and self-catering in Klosters

Hotels are only part of the accommodation market in Klosters.

Holiday apartments can be an excellent choice for:

  • families;
  • groups of friends;
  • visitors staying for a week or longer;
  • ski holidays;
  • anyone wanting more living space;
  • visitors who prefer to prepare some meals themselves.

The wider Davos Klosters destination has a large stock of holiday apartments, ranging from compact properties for couples to larger family apartments and chalets.

Self-catering can be particularly attractive in Switzerland because having a kitchen provides the option of eating some breakfasts or evening meals at home rather than dining out throughout the holiday.

Location remains important.

Before booking an apartment, check:

  • walking distance to Klosters Platz or Klosters Dorf station;
  • distance to Gotschna or Madrisa;
  • proximity to a bus stop;
  • whether there is ski storage;
  • whether parking is included if you are driving;
  • whether bed linen and final cleaning are included in the quoted rate;
  • whether the property qualifies for the Davos Klosters Premium Card.

Apartments in Klosters Platz

These make particular sense for visitors wanting central facilities, Gotschna and easy railway access.

Apartments in Klosters Dorf

These are particularly worth considering for families spending several days on Madrisa.

Apartments farther from the centre

These can offer quieter surroundings and sometimes more space, but check public transport carefully if you do not intend to have a car.

Where to stay in Klosters without a car

Klosters works particularly well without a car, with railway stations at both Klosters Platz and Klosters Dorf and local public transport linking the village with the wider area.

Both Klosters Platz and Klosters Dorf have railway stations, while local public transport connects the village with the wider Davos Klosters area.

Paying guests staying in qualifying hotels and holiday apartments receive the Davos Klosters Premium Card, which includes free local public transport within defined zones as well as other visitor benefits.

For a first car-free visit, we would generally choose Klosters Platz.

Being close to the station makes arrival straightforward, Gotschna is nearby and restaurants and other village facilities are easier to reach on foot.

Klosters Dorf is also perfectly practical without a car if Madrisa is your priority.

When comparing accommodation, don’t simply look at the distance from the centre of Klosters. Check the walking route to the nearest station or bus stop, particularly if travelling with luggage, skis or young children.

Where to stay for a ski holiday

The best winter location depends mainly on where you expect to ski.

For Parsenn and Gotschna

Choose Klosters Platz.

Gotschna gives Klosters direct access towards the Parsenn ski area and is the obvious starting point for visitors expecting to spend most of their ski days there.

For families and Madrisa

Choose Klosters Dorf.

Madrisa has a particularly strong family focus and is often the more convenient mountain for younger or less experienced skiers.

If you want to ski throughout Davos Klosters

Location becomes less critical. Klosters’ railway connections make it possible to explore more of the wider destination, so a convenient station or bus stop may matter more than being immediately beside one particular lift.

Where to stay in Klosters in summer

Summer changes the accommodation equation slightly because visitors tend to spread their activities across a wider area.

Klosters Platz remains the strongest all-round choice for a first visit because of its railway connections, village facilities and Gotschna access.

Klosters Dorf remains particularly attractive for families spending time on Madrisa.

Visitors planning walking or cycling holidays may also find apartments farther from the centre appealing, particularly if they want extra space for equipment.

For ideas on how to spend your stay, see our 30 Things to Do in Klosters in Summer guide.

Best area for families

There are two particularly strong choices.

Klosters Dorf

This is our first choice for families whose holiday will revolve around Madrisa.

Being close to the cable car makes mountain days much easier, particularly with younger children.

Between Klosters Platz and Dorf

Hotels such as Hotel Sport can work well for families who value indoor pools, play facilities and other activities within the hotel.

Families with older children who expect to ski extensively on Parsenn may instead prefer Klosters Platz.

Best area for couples

For most couples visiting Klosters for the first time, Klosters Platz is likely to be the most convenient base. It offers easier access to restaurants, rail connections and Gotschna while still retaining the quieter character that distinguishes Klosters from neighbouring Davos.

Couples seeking a quieter hotel and wellness break may also find Klosters Dorf appealing.

Best area for a longer stay

For a week or longer, we would seriously consider a holiday apartment. Extra living space, cooking facilities and potentially laundry facilities become increasingly useful as the length of a stay increases.

An apartment near Klosters Platz station provides a particularly useful combination of independence and transport access.

Families planning several days on Madrisa may prefer Klosters Dorf instead.

Klosters or Davos: where should you stay?

Klosters and Davos share the same wider mountain destination, but they offer quite different holiday experiences.

Klosters is smaller, quieter and more village-like.

Davos is considerably larger and has a greater concentration of shops, restaurants, nightlife and urban facilities.

Visitors who want a traditional Alpine base while retaining access to the wider Davos Klosters mountain region are likely to prefer Klosters.

Those prioritising nightlife or the largest possible range of restaurants and town facilities may prefer Davos.

Booking accommodation in Klosters

Klosters is not a huge resort, so the most attractive accommodation can become limited during popular periods.

This is particularly relevant for:

  • Christmas and New Year;
  • February ski weeks;
  • school holidays;
  • major events;
  • high-demand summer periods.

If your dates are fixed, it makes sense to compare accommodation reasonably early.

If you are flexible, compare both Klosters Platz and Klosters Dorf rather than restricting your search to a single small area.

Cancellation conditions also matter. Flexible rates can be worthwhile for Alpine trips where travel arrangements or plans may change.
